Makara Sankranti is observed each year in January to mark the first day of sun’s transit into the Makara (Capricorn). While most of the Indian festivals are observed as per the lunar cycle, Makara Sankranti is observed according to Solar cycles. It is celebrated on 14th January every year except in some years when it is shifted by one day.  Kite flying is a tradition followed since ancient times during Makara Sankranti.
