Diwali at the Federation Square 2013
Indians in Melbourne showcased their cultural heritage and diversity with a splendid display of dance, music and fireworks at the Federation square yesterday for the Deepavali celebrations 2013. Both the Federal and Victorian political figures including the Federal Opposition leader Bill Shorten graced the occasion. It was also the first public appearance of the newly appointed Consul General of India in Melbourne, Manika Jain.
A fabulous show that ended with exciting fireworks that provided enjoyment for both kids and the adults were a display of a maturing Indian Community here. The selfless team of organisers’ and volunteers put an awesome show of togetherness displaying the cultural richness of India.
Above all, it was an opportunity for the Indian Community to integrate with the main stream, while cherishing our cultural heritage. Moreover it provided an opportunity for the rest of the Australians who have participated in large numbers to better understand the Indian Community in Australia.
Deepavali in coming years will become a major Australian Festival. The Festival of lights has all the ingredients that will one day define the spirit and nature of a thriving Indian Community here.
