After “Why This Kolaveri Di”, “Jimikki Kammal” conquers India

In 2011, “Why This Kolaveri Di” a song from the soundtrack of Tamil film, ‘3’, written and sung by Dhanush conquered India.  This instant viral hit became the most searched Youtube Video in India at that time.  The song with Tanglish (Tamil and English) lyrics, which was released in 21st November 2011, within weeks had nearly 3.5 million views of Youtube and more than 1 million shares on Facebook. Five years later a challenger is born for Kolaveri Di –  “Jimikki Kammal”, has conquered both Kerala and Tamil Nadu and its popularity is spreading across India. The song “ Jimikki Kammal” from superstar Mohanlal-starrer Velipadinte Pusthakam is the new rage in South India.

As more and more people upload their versions of dance for the song, it is showing all potentials for overtaking Kolaveri Di. Unlike Kolaveri Di, the original movie clipping of the song is marked by poor choreography. The movie was an Onam release. Onam is Kerala’s harvest festival celebrated by all Malayalis . Ahead of Onam, a bunch of college students from Indian School of Commerce in Cochin, came up with a video performing on the song and So far, the video has received more than 2 million views on YouTube. The two star dancers in the video became overnight sensations in Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The trend continued with Malayalis across the world uploading their videos of dancing in the traditional Onam dress.

Someone even tweeted the song to Jimmy Kimmel, as his name sounds similar to “ Jimikki Kammal “and he tweeted back saying he loves the song.( James Christian Kimmel is an American television host, comedian, writer, and producer. He is the host and executive producer of Jimmy Kimmel Live).
