Australian Time zones

Australia has three time zones. They are Australian Western Standard time (AWST) , Australian Central Standard time (ACST ) and Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) . In this article, time in each zone is given taking UTC as the base . UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time , which for all practical purposes , same as the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Below is the list of Australian States and Territories with  time zones and day light saving time information.


South Australia


Australian Central Daylight Time  –  UTC + 10:30 hours – This time zone offset is used during summer

Australian Central Standard Time – UTC + 9:30 hours  –  This time zone offset is used during winter in this location

Start of Day Light Saving time – First Sunday in October at 2:00 AM

End of day light saving time – First Sunday in April at 2:00AM (which is 3am Daylight Saving Time)


New South Wales – only in Yancowinna County


Australian Central Day Light Time – UTC + 10:30 hours –  This time zone offset is used during summer.

Australian Central Standard Time – UTC + 9:30 hours  –  This time zone offset is used during winter in this location

Start of Day Light Saving time – First Sunday in October at 2:00 AM

End of day light saving time – First Sunday in April at 2:00AM (which is 3am Daylight Saving Time)


Northern Territorry


Australian Central Standard Time – UTC + 9:30 hours

This time standard is used in Darwin all year round.


Australian Capital Territory


Australian Eastern Daylight Time  –  Time zone offset: UTC + 11 hours – This time zone offset is used during summer

Australian Eastern Standard Time  – Time zone offset: UTC + 10 hours  –  This time zone offset is used during winter in this location

Start of Day Light Saving time – First Sunday in October at 2:00 AM

End of day light saving time – First Sunday in April at 2:00AM (which is 3am Daylight Saving Time)

Victoria


Australian Eastern Daylight Time  –  Time zone offset: UTC + 11 hours – This time zone offset is used during summer

Australian Eastern Standard Time  – Time zone offset: UTC + 10 hours  –  This time zone offset is used during winter in this location

Start of Day Light Saving time – First Sunday in October at 2:00 AM

End of day light saving time – First Sunday in April at 2:00AM (which is 3am Daylight Saving Time)


Queensland


Australian Eastern Standard Time – Time zone offset: UTC + 10 hours  –   This time zone is used in Queensland all around the year.


Western Australia


Australian Western Standard Time – Time zone offset: UTC + 8 hours  – This time zone offset is used all year in this location


Norfolk Island


Norfolk Time – Time zone offset: UTC + 11:30 hours – This time zone offset is used all year in this location


Christmas Island


Christmas Island Time – Time zone offset: UTC + 7 hours – This time zone offset is used all year in this location


Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)


Queensland, New South Wales (with the exception of the town of Broken Hill), Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory.

Coordinated Universal Time plus 10 hours (UTC +10).


Australian Central Standard Time (ACST)


 South Australia, the town of Broken Hill in western New South Wales and the Northern Territory.

Coordinated Universal Time plus 9.5 hours (UTC +9.5).


Australian Western Standard Time (AWST)


Western Australia.

Coordinated Universal Time plus 8 hours (UTC +8).

The Clocks are advanced by one hour during summer in States that observe day light saving time which includes New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, and the Australian Capital Territory.  The clocks are put back by 1:00 hour in April when the day light saving time ends.


 Where Daylight saving is observed:


NSW, ACT,Vic and Tas move from AEST to Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT), and clocks are advanced to UTC +11.

SA and the NSW town of Broken Hill move from ACST to Australian Central Daylight Time (ACDT), and clocks are advanced to UTC +10.5 .

Daylight saving is not observed in Queensland, the Northern Territory or Western Australia.
