Kite Festival in Australia – a Brief Introduction
Uttarayan is a major festival in Gujarat. Uttarayan or Makar Sankranthi is harvest festival, and celebrated all around India . Makar Sankranthi is the beginning of Sun’s movement to the zodiac sign of Makara Rashi. In Gujarat Makar Sankranti is celebrated for 2 days. 14th January is Uttarayan and 15th January is Vasi Uttarayan. People especially kids will start playing with Kites right from the month of December. Glass powder coated (abrasive) threads are used to fly the kites and the game is to cut off each other’s kites by pulling off.
Wherever there is a significant Gujarati presence, Kite festival is celebrated in all its vigor. In Australia all capital cities including Melbourne , Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane celebrate kite festival in a major way. In Melbourne and Sydney, with comparatively larger Gujarati population Gujarati organizations, BAPS temples and individuals organize separate Kite festivals. Usually organizers provide kites, but most prefer to make it at home. Kites can be bought online too. http://www.lekite.com.au.
In Gujarat this is also a season of accidents and deaths. One main reason for accidents is that the kites are mostly flown from terraces for good visibility and flying easiness. Kids especially get completely immersed in the game and forget about surroundings, end up getting injured. The threads coated with abrasives are also another cause of injury. So take care about your safety while flying kites.
