List of Hindu Temples in Victoria

2011 Australian Census registers 83102 Hindus in the Australian State of Victoria. This also means that the Hindu population has nearly doubled in the last ten years. The 2011 Census also shows that there are around 275000 Hindus living in Australia. Majority of this Hindu population lives in Melbourne and Sydney.

With the increasing population of Hindus in Victoria, many more temples were constructed across the state to cater the spiritual needs of the community. These temples also function as cultural hubs, meeting places and for solemnising marriages.

We have included opening hours of temples in this article. The details are up-to-date as of the published date. But we advise our readers to go to respective temple websites to counter check as we may not be able to update future changes in opening hours.

Temple History

Hindu Society of Australia was officially launched in 1982. In 1982, Hindu society adopted a constitution and became an incorporated body, with a principle objective of constructing a Hindu Temple in Victoria. In 1984, the society bought a land of 14.35 acres in Carrum Downs for the construction of a temple for $72300. The temple ground breaking ceremony was conducted on 1986. In 1988, Springvale council issued permission to build a temple in the site. The foundation stones were cut in India and was blessed by priests from temple in India before transported to Australia. A temporary building was constructed on the site and Poojas were commenced on the site.

The Maha kumbhabhishekam was organised on 22nd May 1994. The construction of the temple continued for the next ten years.

This temple is conceived and built as a traditional Hindu temple in which Pujas and rituals are conducted similar to that of temples in India. After the construction of the large auditorium and Canteen, celebrations of marriages have become a common feature here. If Hindus in Melbourne crave for an Indian temple atmosphere or want to celebrate Hindu festivals like deepavali , holi, Ramnavami etc. with the community, this is where they should be.
