Indian origin Rupinder Kaur Sandhu is selected to represent Australia at the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan along with eighteen other athletes.
Rupinder Sandhu will compete in 48kg category wrestling and fellow contestant Carissa-Jane Holland in 53Kg. Rupinder also won Gold Medal in 48kg wrestling division in this year’s Australian National Championships held in Sydney.
Rupinder Kaur migrated to Australia ten years ago from India. Married and settled in Australia Rupinder is a proud mother of a two-year-old girl. She represented Australia in 53Kg Division wrestling at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. She is also hopeful about her chances in representing Australia at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games at the 48Kg Division.
Though this is the 5th Asian Indoor Games, Australia is participating for the first time. The Games will be held from 17-27th September 2017. The Australian team is contesting in three sports events; weightlifting, wrestling and taekwondo in this 45 Nation event.
At the Games a total of 21 sports will be represented: five Olympic sports (cycling, equestrian, taekwondo, weightlifting and wrestling), five Olympic sports contested only in non-Olympic formats (basketball, athletics, football, swimming and tennis) and eleven non-Olympic sports (bowling, chess, cue sports, dancesport, ju-jitsu, kickboxing, kurash, muaythai, sambo, belt wrestling and traditional wrestling)
